Josh Gattis takes parting shot at Michigan after leaving for Miami

Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis made the surprise decision to leave for the same position with the Miami Hurricanes. He gave a hint as to why in a message to the team on the way out.

Gattis, the reigning Broyles Award winner as the nation’s top assistant, unexpectedly jumped to Miami on Sunday to become the Hurricanes’ new offensive coordinator. In his farewell message to Michigan players, Gattis hinted at dissatisfaction with the university administration and suggested that he was not valued by the school.

“I sacrificed so much personally to stand in the fight with each of you which I would never take back,” Gattis wrote, via Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit News. “Unfortunately the past few weeks has told a different story to me about the very little appreciation I have here from administration. In life I would never advise anyone to be where they are not wanted and I owe that to my family and my integrity to hold myself to this standard!”

Gattis did not expand upon how he felt disrespected by the administration. One possibility could be that he sought a raise after his standout season as offensive coordinator, and the Wolverines were not willing to give it to him. Whatever the case, Gattis clearly felt significantly disrespected if he’s willing to make a lateral move to a program that has not had Michigan’s level of success recently.

Gattis’ departure means the Wolverines now need an offensive and defensive coordinator. They almost lost their head coach this week as well, but he will instead lead the process of rebuilding his staff.
