Over the years, there hasn’t been many Sheffield United players more committed to the cause than George Baldock. However, his Blades future is in doubt as his contract is set to expire this summer.

Since becoming a Greek international, it seems like every window there are several rumours flying around about Greek clubs trying to sign Baldock. And this summer, that could well be the case as he will be a free agent.

Interestingly though, Chris Wilder’s recent comments could perhaps be a hint that the 31-year-old may receive a contract renewal at some point in the next couple of months.

Chris Wilder on Sheffield United star man George Baldock

“He’s a bright boy, still life and soul of the changing room. But he does it in a respectful way,” via the Yorkshire Post.

Wilder added: “He’s got a great manner about him and he wants to win. Of course it was a surprise when the talk of him playing international football, so we talked about grandparents and Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish and the Republic, and a complete surprise when he turned out in the colours of Greece.

“But that for me is only an addition for his game and something that can improve him going forward.”

The defender for the Blades, who became part of the club from MK Dons in 2017, received his first call-up to the Greece national team by Gus Poyet before the June 2022–23 UEFA Nations League matches. He marked his debut with a notable performance in a 1–0 victory over Northern Ireland in Belfast during June 2022.

The Sheffield United gaffer went on to say: “His attitude epitomises a Sheffield United footballer, for me. On and off the pitch he works extremely hard and on it he gives everything and that’s why there’s a great connection between him and the supporters.”
